ISPO Webinar to Help O&P Professionals Build Clear, Ethical and Impactful Clinical Case Studies

The International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics will host an upcoming webinar designed to help prosthetists, orthotists, rehabilitation professionals and students create stronger clinical case studies for education, publication and professional knowledge sharing.

The webinar, titled “Case Study Template and Guidelines,” will be presented by Phil Stevens, PhD, MEd, CPO, Vice President of Clinical Affairs for Hanger Clinic. It will take place on Thursday, June 18, at 15:00 CEST, and will focus on the practical skills needed to structure, write and present ethical clinical case studies in prosthetics and orthotics.

Clinical case studies remain one of the most valuable tools for sharing practice-based knowledge in O&P. They allow clinicians to document real patient journeys, explain clinical decision-making, describe device selection and fitting strategies, and communicate functional outcomes. When written well, a case study can help other professionals understand not only what was done, but why it was done and what lessons can be applied in future care.

The session is expected to provide practical guidance on how to develop clear, ethical and impactful case studies. Participants will gain insight into how to structure a case, present patient information appropriately, describe clinical interventions and communicate outcomes in a way that supports professional learning.

This is especially relevant for clinicians working in the IMEA region, where valuable case-based knowledge is often generated in busy clinical settings but is not always documented or shared widely. Many prosthetists and orthotists manage complex cases involving trauma, diabetes, paediatrics, neurology, spinal deformity, partial foot amputation, low-resource fabrication, humanitarian care and advanced component selection. Structured case reporting can help bring those experiences into the wider international conversation.

The webinar will also address an important ethical issue: how to present patient information responsibly. Case studies must protect patient dignity, privacy and consent while still offering enough clinical detail to be educational. This balance is particularly important in rehabilitation, where patient stories can be powerful but must never be reduced to publicity or anecdote.

Phil Stevens brings extensive experience in clinical education, evidence-based practice and O&P outcomes. Hanger Clinic describes him as an upper-limb prosthetic specialist and Vice President of Clinical Affairs who develops evidence-based clinical programmes designed to help improve orthotic and prosthetic outcomes. For students and early-career clinicians, the webinar may offer a useful entry point into professional writing and clinical communication. For experienced practitioners, it may help standardise how cases are prepared for conferences, journals, internal education, training programmes or multidisciplinary review.

The topic also aligns with ISPO’s wider mission as a multidisciplinary global organisation supporting professionals involved in prosthetics, orthotics, mobility and assistive technology. ISPO describes its work as improving quality of life for people who may benefit from rehabilitation practice, prosthetic and orthotic care, mobility products and assistive technology. The webinar will include live interpretation in French and Spanish, as well as multi-language live captions, making it more accessible to ISPO’s international membership and wider rehabilitation community. This multilingual format is important for a global O&P profession where valuable clinical experience exists across many countries and language groups.

The session is free for ISPO members and costs EUR 15 for non-members. For clinicians, educators, researchers and students interested in improving how they document and share clinical practice, the webinar offers a practical opportunity to strengthen both writing quality and ethical reporting.

For the IMEA CPO community, the webinar should be seen as more than a writing workshop. It is an opportunity to improve how regional clinical experience is captured, communicated and valued. Strong case studies can help highlight innovation from the Middle East, Africa and South Asia, support education, encourage collaboration and contribute to better patient care.
