Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa visited the Orthopedic Department of the National Hospital in Colombo this morning to inspect a pilot project producing prosthetic limbs using modern technology. During his visit, Dr. Jayatissa was given a comprehensive overview of the project’s objectives, operational methods, and the significant impact it aims to have on patient care.
The initiative, implemented with the sponsorship of the Humanitarian for Empowerment Institute of Switzerland, aims to locally manufacture high-quality artificial limbs using advanced materials and techniques. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, the project seeks not only to improve the comfort and functionality of prosthetic devices but also to make them more accessible to individuals across Sri Lanka who need mobility assistance. Officials said the project has already demonstrated strong results, offering new hope for persons with disabilities in Sri Lanka. Early feedback from recipients of the prosthetic limbs has been overwhelmingly positive, highlighting improvements in both daily mobility and overall quality of life.
The Minister engaged with specialists and technicians involved in the project and observed the manufacturing process of the prosthetic limbs first-hand. He asked questions about the selection of materials, customization for individual patients, and the ongoing support services available. He commended the team for adopting modern technology to enhance mobility and rehabilitation services in the country, emphasizing the importance of continued innovation in Sri Lanka’s healthcare sector and expressing confidence that such initiatives would pave the way for broader advancements in medical care for people with disabilities.
