Al-Nahrain University has taken an important step towards potentially establishing a doctoral programme in Prosthetics and Orthotics Engineering in Iraq.
A ministerial committee visited the university’s Department of Prosthetics and Orthotics Engineering to evaluate whether it has the academic resources, research environment, infrastructure and facilities required to introduce a PhD programme.
Professor Dr Ayad Murad Takhakh, Dean of the College of Engineering, received the committee alongside Assistant Professor Dr Fahad Muhannad, Head of the Department of Prosthetics and Orthotics Engineering.
According to the university announcement, the committee reviewed the department’s scientific and academic capabilities and assessed its readiness against the requirements established by Iraq’s Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.
The visit represents an evaluation rather than confirmation that the programme has already been approved or opened. Any subsequent launch would depend on the committee’s findings and completion of the relevant ministerial approval process.
Building advanced P&O education in Iraq
A dedicated PhD programme would represent a significant expansion of Iraq’s educational pathway in prosthetics, orthotics and rehabilitation engineering.
Al-Nahrain University already provides undergraduate education through a curriculum combining engineering, clinical practice and rehabilitation-related subjects. Published course information includes prosthetics, orthotics, anatomy, biomechanics, biomaterials, manufacturing processes, clinical practice, CAD/CAM, robotics, artificial intelligence, additive manufacturing and advanced gait analysis.
The department’s website also lists an MSc study plan, demonstrating an existing postgraduate foundation upon which doctoral-level education could potentially be developed.
A PhD programme would move beyond professional preparation and focus more intensively on generating original research. This could create opportunities for Iraqi researchers to investigate clinical and technical challenges that are especially relevant to the country and surrounding region.

Its value would depend not only on establishing the qualification but also on the quality and relevance of the research produced. Priorities should include peer-reviewed publication, collaboration with clinical services, measurable patient benefit and translation of research into technologies that can be manufactured and maintained locally.
The ministerial committee’s visit is therefore an encouraging but preliminary development. It signals the department’s ambition to extend its academic programmes and create new opportunities for postgraduate students and researchers.
For Iraq’s P&O sector, the proposed PhD programme could help build the people, evidence and innovation required to strengthen rehabilitation services over the long term.
