Imagine a community where a young physiotherapist in rural Kenya can connect with an experienced orthotist in Nigeria to solve a challenging clinical case. Picture a prosthetist in Ghana discovering a low-cost, locally-made assistive device developed in Uganda that could change the lives of her patients. Envision rehabilitation professionals across Africa learning from each other, growing together, and building a future where quality rehabilitation is accessible to everyone who needs it.
This is the vision of RehabReach Africa.
Who Are We?
RehabReach Africa is more than an organisation—it is a growing movement of rehabilitation professionals, health systems thinkers, assistive technology advocates, and champions of disability inclusion. We are physiotherapists, occupational therapists, prosthetists, orthotists, speech therapists, and rehabilitation practitioners working tirelessly across the African continent.
We are African-led and African-focused, drawing strength from the continent’s remarkable resilience, innovation, and collaborative spirit. Our community includes experienced clinicians who have served their communities for decades, early-career professionals full of fresh energy and ideas, educators shaping the next generation of practitioners, researchers generating essential evidence, and policymakers designing the health systems of the future.
What unites us all is a single, powerful vision: accessible, equitable, and quality rehabilitation for every African who needs it.
“We are not just building a network; we are building a movement for rehabilitation justice across Africa.”
What Do We Do?
At RehabReach Africa, we believe that connectivity creates capacity. We know that no single professional, organisation, or government can solve the rehabilitation challenges facing the continent alone. Real progress requires collaboration—sharing what works, learning from what does not, and building collective strength.
Our work is built on three powerful pillars:
1. Connecting People 🤝
Loneliness in practice is one of the greatest challenges facing rehabilitation professionals, especially those working in remote or underserved areas. We bring people together across Africa’s diverse regions—from bustling urban centres to the most remote rural communities.
Through RehabReach Africa, members can:
- Share clinical expertise and real-world case experiences with colleagues facing similar challenges
- Find mentors to guide their professional journey and offer guidance to emerging practitioners
- Collaborate on research and programmatic initiatives that advance the field
- Build cross-border partnerships that strengthen the entire rehabilitation sector
When a clinician in a small town feels connected to a broader community of practice, they are no longer alone. They become part of something larger—a collective force for change.
2. Connecting Opportunities 🌱
The rehabilitation landscape in Africa is rich with untapped potential, yet many opportunities remain hidden or inaccessible. We help our community discover and access:
- Training and continuing education programs that build skills and advance careers
- Career pathways across the continent and internationally
- Funding and grant opportunities for rehabilitation projects, research, and innovation
- Innovative assistive technology solutions being developed and deployed across Africa, including low-cost, contextually appropriate devices
By making these opportunities visible and accessible, we help our members grow, innovate, and make an even greater impact in their communities.
3. Connecting Ideas 💡
Innovation flourishes when ideas intersect. RehabReach Africa serves as a dynamic platform for:
- Knowledge exchange that bridges clinical practice, research, and policy
- Adaptation of global best practices to African contexts, ensuring solutions are culturally and contextually appropriate
- Co-creation of rehabilitation solutions that address real needs in real communities
- Amplification of African voices in global rehabilitation discourse, ensuring the continent’s perspectives are heard and valued
When a successful program in one country is adapted and implemented in another, when a researcher’s findings inform practice on the ground, when a clinician’s insight shapes policy—this is how lasting change begins.
Why Do We Exist?
The Urgent Need
Africa carries a disproportionate burden of disability and chronic health conditions. Road traffic injuries, conflict, infectious diseases, diabetes, and the growing burden of non-communicable diseases all contribute to the pressing need for rehabilitation services.
Yet access to quality rehabilitation remains critically limited across much of the continent. Consider these challenges:
- Severe workforce shortages: Many African nations have fewer than one rehabilitation professional per 100,000 population, far below what is needed to meet population needs
- Geographic barriers: Vast distances, mountainous terrain, and underdeveloped transport infrastructure make access difficult for rural communities
- Limited assistive technology access: The World Health Organization estimates that over one billion people need assistive products globally, yet only 1 in 10 have access in low-income countries—and this challenge is especially acute in Africa
- Under-integrated services: Rehabilitation is often siloed from primary healthcare, diabetes management, maternal health, mental health, and other essential services, leading to missed opportunities for early intervention
A Shared Vision
We exist because rehabilitation is not optional—it is essential.
Rehabilitation is the bridge between injury or illness and a life of dignity, independence, and full participation in society. It prevents avoidable disability, restores function, reduces dependence, and transforms lives. It is not just about helping people live with disability—it is about preventing avoidable disability in the first place.
We exist because no single organisation, government, or professional can solve this challenge alone.
The challenges are too vast, the needs too great, and the resources too limited for any one actor to address in isolation. Real, lasting progress requires collective action—sharing resources, expertise, and innovation across borders and disciplines.
We exist because Africa’s rehabilitation professionals are ready to lead.
Across the continent, practitioners are developing innovative solutions, conducting essential research, and delivering life-changing care every day. They deserve a platform that supports, connects, and amplifies their work. They deserve to learn from each other, grow together, and build a future where rehabilitation is universally accessible.
