Kenya’s prosthetics and orthotics community has a new platform for sharing its stories, expertise and achievements following the launch of OTN Insight, a magazine and professional newsletter dedicated to Kenyan Orthopaedic Technologists and the wider rehabilitation sector.
Launched through the Orthopaedic Technology Network (OTN), the inaugural August 2026 edition describes OTN Insight as the network’s flagship publication and sets out an ambition to give Kenya’s Orthopaedic Technology profession a dedicated voice.
The publication is being led by Kenyan CPO and Orthopaedic Technologist Samuel Mutua, who announced OTN Insight as the first magazine, newsletter, feature and spotlight focused specifically on Kenyan Orthopaedic Technologists working across prosthetics and orthotics.
The cover of Volume 1, Issue 001 introduces the publication around four themes — Knowledge, Innovation, Mobility and Opportunity — and describes its wider purpose as empowering a new generation of professionals and leaders across prosthetics, orthotics, rehabilitation and assistive technology.
“Introduce the Kenyan P&O to the world”
In its inaugural editor’s letter, OTN Insight makes clear that the publication is intended to be more than an industry newsletter.
It was created from a belief that Orthopaedic Technology professionals across Kenya need a publication capable of reflecting the breadth of their profession, connecting clinical excellence with surgical innovation, health policy, rehabilitation science and the lived experiences of patients.
One of its stated ambitions is particularly significant: to introduce Kenyan P&O to the world.
That international outlook could provide an important new channel for showcasing Kenyan clinicians, educators, researchers, students and innovators to the wider African and global rehabilitation community.
The publication also intends to bring together perspectives from orthopaedic surgeons, biomedical engineers, physiotherapists, health economists and policymakers, positioning prosthetics and orthotics within the wider rehabilitation ecosystem rather than treating the profession in isolation.
Recording the development of Kenyan P&O
Another of OTN Insight’s ambitions is to document a profession that is evolving rapidly.
Its introductory feature, “Building the Future Before It Exists,” describes the magazine as a publication dedicated to prosthetics, orthotics, rehabilitation, innovation, education and leadership across Kenya and Africa.
The publication intends to record professional milestones, celebrate pioneers, showcase innovations, support students and connect the Kenyan community with the international rehabilitation movement.
This comes as technological change is increasingly influencing P&O practice. OTN Insight identifies artificial intelligence, digital manufacturing and 3D printing among the developments reshaping rehabilitation and device fabrication, while highlighting the growing contribution of African universities, graduates and researchers.
The challenge, according to the publication, is that many of these African stories remain untold.
OTN Insight consequently wants to connect clinicians, students, educators, researchers, innovators, policymakers, manufacturers, hospitals and partners through a common professional platform.
Clinical practice, education, research and opportunity
The scope outlined for future issues is broad.
OTN Insight plans to feature the next generation of Kenyan P&O leaders alongside established clinicians, educators and innovators. Content will explore collaboration, research, mentorship and technology as well as hospitals and rehabilitation facilities delivering services across Kenya.
Clinical content is also central to the concept, with plans for real clinical cases, practical insights and evidence-based approaches from experienced professionals.
Education and career development will receive dedicated coverage, including continuous learning and mentorship as well as scholarships, fellowships, internships, conferences and international career opportunities.
Research is another priority, with the magazine seeking to translate studies and innovations into practical knowledge that Kenyan clinicians and students can apply.
These areas could make OTN Insight particularly valuable to students and early-career professionals who may otherwise have limited access to locally relevant professional information.
Spotlight on NAOT Kenya
The inaugural edition also features the National Association of Orthopaedic Technologists (NAOT) Kenya, recognising the association’s role in professional representation, networking, collaboration, education and the continued development of Orthopaedic Technology and rehabilitation services.
OTN Insight says it intends to complement existing professional initiatives rather than replace them, providing another platform for documenting achievements and sharing knowledge.
The first edition introduces three members of the NAOT leadership: Chairperson Kenneth K. Meli, Secretary General Ronald O. Nyamweya, and Treasurer Priscah N. Kiragu. The profiles highlight not only their clinical experience but their involvement in education, service development and rehabilitation initiatives within Kenya.
A new voice for African P&O
The emergence of OTN Insight is significant beyond Kenya.
Across Africa, considerable P&O expertise, locally developed solutions, professional initiatives and rehabilitation programmes receive relatively little international exposure. Dedicated professional media can help make that work more visible while strengthening connections between clinicians working in different countries.
For IMEA CPO, the launch is particularly welcome because it adds another locally led voice to the growing conversation around prosthetics, orthotics and rehabilitation across Africa.
OTN Insight concludes its inaugural introduction with an invitation extending from students and graduates to experienced clinicians, educators, researchers and rehabilitation partners: “Read. Learn. Connect. Contribute. Lead.”
If the publication achieves its ambition, OTN Insight could become more than a record of Kenya’s P&O profession. It could provide a window through which the wider rehabilitation community discovers the clinicians, educators, innovations and ideas emerging from Kenya and East Africa.
