Advancing Pediatric Orthotic Care: Insights from ESSPO’s 3rd Scientific Day

The 3rd Scientific Day hosted by the Egyptian Scientific Society for Prosthetics & Orthotics (ESSPO) in partnership with International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics successfully brought together clinicians, researchers, and educators from across the region, with a strong focus on improving pediatric orthotic care and rehabilitation practice.

One of the day’s distinguished contributors was Aalaa Ali, a recognised speaker, researcher, and practitioner in prosthetics and orthotics. She delivered a keynote lecture titled “Gait Abnormalities in Children and the Role”, contributing both clinical insight and practical guidance for professionals working with complex pediatric populations.

The event provided comprehensive scientific content covering a range of topics central to advancing pediatric clinical practice, including:

  • Small Braces, Big Impact: the role of pediatric orthoses in improving function and quality of life
  • From Tone to Function: managing pediatric spasticity with orthotic solutions
  • Optimizing Gait: evidence-based criteria for selecting ankle-foot orthoses in children with cerebral palsy
  • Orthotics as Medication: reframing orthoses as active therapeutic tools, not mere supports
  • Lower Limb Pediatric Orthoses: design principles and clinical applications
  • Multidisciplinary Rehabilitation After Pediatric Blast Injuries, with strategies for expedited recovery

In addition to traditional lecturing, Aalaa led an interactive workshop on AFO casting, demonstrating how foundational techniques can be integrated with modern CAD/CAM and 3D printing technologies to elevate orthotic design and fabrication workflows—highlighting the future direction of the field.

Participants praised the Scientific Day as a valuable forum for knowledge exchange, multidisciplinary dialogue, and clinical advancement. The event underscored the importance of continuous education and innovation in improving outcomes for pediatric patients with neuromusculoskeletal conditions.

Aalaa expressed gratitude to the conference organisers, faculty, and attendees, noting that events like this “emphasise that continuous learning and knowledge sharing are key to better patient outcomes.”
