Mozambique Receives 1,200 Prostheses from India for Rehabilitation

“We are committed to providing approximately 1,200 lower limb prostheses to Mozambicans in greatest need,” announced Health Minister Ussene Isse at the official launch event for the prosthesis donation campaign in Maputo.

This initiative, backed by the Indian organization Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS), is part of the “India for Humanity” program—an effort that commemorates 50 years of Mozambique’s independence and the diplomatic partnership between Mozambique and India.

Minister Isse emphasized that the campaign marks “a new beginning” for hundreds of individuals who have lost mobility due to illness such as diabetes or through road accidents. “Most importantly, it restores hope, dignity, and a sense of community,” he stated.

For the next 60 days, the orthopedic center at Maputo Central Hospital will run a comprehensive physical and social rehabilitation program, with support from BMVSS specialist technicians.

Attending the ceremony, India’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Environment, Shri Kirti Vardhan, remarked that the initiative “embodies India’s spirit of solidarity” with Mozambique. “I wish to express my gratitude to Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti for providing these prosthetics and to the India for Humanity program for making this possible,” he added.

According to Mouzinho Saíde, Director of Maputo Central Hospital, Mozambique currently operates 11 orthopaedic centres, with plans to establish additional units in Manica and Maputo provinces. In 2024 alone, the hospital welcomed 1,007 new patients, 175 of whom required care following amputation, while the remainder presented with neurological, orthopedic, or trauma-related conditions.
