Saudi Humanitarian Aid: Prosthetic Limb Project for Ukrainians in Poland

Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to Ukraine, Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al-Baraka, officially inaugurated the fifth stage of the prosthetic limbs project for Ukrainians in Poland, an initiative managed by the King Salman Center for Humanitarian Aid and Support, and scheduled to run from July 14 to 21, 2025. Ambassador of Ukraine to Poland, Vasyl Bodnar, was also present to support and witness the initiative. This project forms an integral part of Saudi Arabia’s ongoing commitment to humanitarian relief for the Ukrainian population, enhancing earlier assistance efforts that have included the provision of essential food supplies, vital medicines, and emergency power generators.

The current phase specifically targets victims who have lost limbs due to ongoing hostilities in Ukraine, aiming to restore their mobility and dramatically improve their quality of life through access to advanced prosthetic care. The initiative underscores the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s steadfast dedication to alleviating the suffering of Ukrainian civilians impacted by conflict, and builds on a comprehensive strategy to mitigate complex humanitarian challenges faced by affected populations.

A primary objective of this stage is to deliver medical assistance to Ukrainian individuals with disabilities residing in Poland. During this phase, 20 recipients received new prosthetic limbs, and physical measurements were conducted for upcoming beneficiaries in subsequent stages. The program also monitored patient outcomes, delivered post-prosthetic rehabilitation, and provided medical training for Ukrainian recipients to support their adaptation and ongoing care.

The Saudi Humanitarian Support Program for Ukraine began the prosthetics project in September 2024, marking the present phase as the fifth milestone in a series of coordinated campaigns. The project timeline includes plans for two further stages to be completed by the end of 2025, reinforcing its comprehensive and sustained commitment. Cumulatively, earlier phases involved the fitting of 115 prosthetic limbs with the assistance of 43 qualified medical volunteers, while the current stage is being managed by a team of seven dedicated volunteers. Collectively, the initiative aims to fit a total of 137 prostheses, maintaining an average of 30 prostheses provided per campaign, utilizing the latest advances in Direct Socket prosthetic technology.

The total projected cost for all stages of the Saudi humanitarian project to deliver prosthetics to Ukrainians, both completed and anticipated for this year, stands at USD 3,481,674.67. This ambitious undertaking is part of Saudi Arabia’s broader humanitarian mission to support amputees globally, empower vulnerable individuals, and contribute to raising living standards in areas affected by crisis and conflict.

It is significant to recall that, during the visit of Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud to Kyiv in February 2023, Saudi Arabia announced a broad package of humanitarian assistance to Ukraine totaling USD 410 million, reaffirming the Kingdom’s enduring solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
