Support for Amputee Football in Liberia: An Inspiring Partnership

The Vice President for Administration of the Liberia Amputee Football and Sports Association (LAFASA), Richard Duo, has commended the Ministry of Youth and Sports for its continued support toward amputee football in the country. Speaking on the OK FM Sports Desk program, hosted by Sylvester Tamba, on Saturday, September 13, 2025, Mr. Duo expressed his appreciation to Minister Jero Cole Bangelu and the ministry for their commitment.

“If there is one government institution that should be appreciated in the Boakai-led administration, it is the Ministry of Youth and Sports,” Mr. Duo said. He highlighted the ministry’s steadfast role not only in sustaining the amputee football program but also in raising national awareness about the capabilities and aspirations of persons with disabilities.

Mr. Duo particularly praised Minister Bangelu for his dedication to empowering people with disabilities, especially the amputee national football team. He stressed that Minister Bangelu’s leadership has translated into increased resources, enhanced training opportunities, and expanded visibility for amputee athletes—creating an environment where athletes can excel and serve as role models for others.

According to Mr. Duo, the ministry’s consistent backing demonstrates a strong commitment to inclusivity and the development of disability sports in Liberia. This ongoing support has enabled greater participation in both domestic and international competitions, fueling a sense of pride and motivation among team members. By investing in specialist equipment, accessible facilities, and skilled coaching, the Ministry has actively facilitated not just the athletes’ physical rehabilitation but also their social integration and community involvement.

By recognizing the ministry’s efforts, Mr. Duo emphasized the positive impact such support has on the lives of people with disabilities. Beyond the field, he noted that these initiatives contribute to changing negative perceptions, promoting equality, and affirming the dignity of every individual, regardless of physical ability.

He also underscored the importance of collaboration between government and sports associations in advancing inclusivity and promoting sports development nationwide. Mr. Duo called for strengthened partnerships, ongoing dialogue, and sustained investment in adaptive sports. He encouraged other stakeholders—both public and private—to join in supporting disability sports, asserting that collective action will help build a more accessible, empowered, and unified society for all Liberians.
