Yassin from Gaza has his first prosthetic fitting appointment with his prosthetist

Yassin, 12, from Gaza, lost both legs in a bombing — yet his spirit remains unshaken. Through HEAL Palestine’s Global Healing Program, he is beginning a long and courageous journey toward walking again.

This week, Yassin had his first prosthetic fitting appointment with his doctor. For now, he must wear compression sleeves for two more weeks to prepare his legs for proper fitting — a challenging step, as one of his legs remains swollen and the sleeves can be uncomfortable. His medical team explained that these compressions are essential, forming the base for the prosthetics he will soon receive.

During the appointment, Yassin asked what kind of prosthetics he would be getting. He and his sister, Fadwa, had hoped for advanced models — the kind that might even allow him to “feel his toes.” When they learned that his prosthetics would be more basic for now, and that the two legs wouldn’t match due to the complexity of his injuries, their disappointment was deep. There were tears, questions, and long moments of reassurance.

His doctor promised to work with Yassin in stages, adapting and improving the prosthetics over time until he can walk with balance, confidence, and symmetry.

The road ahead will not be easy — but Yassin is not walking it alone. Through the compassion of our volunteers and the strength of his own determination, step by step, he is moving toward healing, independence, and hope.
