ISPO Webinar to Explore the Clinical Importance of Microprocessor Knee Prostheses

05/10/2026

The International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO) will host an online webinar on 26 October 2026, bringing together prosthetic and physiotherapy perspectives on microprocessor knee prostheses (MPKs).

Titled “The Clinical Importance of Microprocessor Knee Prostheses: Enhancing Mobility, Function, and Quality of Life for Individuals with Lower Limb Amputation,” the session will explore the clinical evidence behind these technologies and their place within rehabilitation.

For professionals across the IMEA CPO community, the webinar offers an opportunity to examine how device prescription and rehabilitation can work together to support meaningful outcomes for people with lower limb amputation.

Connecting Prosthetic Technology with Rehabilitation

The programme will provide an evidence-informed overview of MPKs, with attention to both mobility and the activities that matter in everyday life.

Topics will include gait, balance and mobility; safety and falls reduction; rehabilitation and functional training; and confidence in community participation. The presenters will also address functional independence, quality of life, and evidence-based approaches to MPK prescription and rehabilitation pathways.

These discussions will connect questions about prosthetic technology with the practical work of rehabilitation. Alongside evaluating a device, clinicians must consider how people learn to use it, develop confidence and progress towards their individual goals.

The webinar’s combined prosthetic and physiotherapy approach should be particularly relevant to teams seeking closer coordination between assessment, prescription, fitting and functional training.

Two Clinical Perspectives

The session will feature two professionals from Ottobock Care Australia:

  • Katrina Shatford, Senior Amputee Physiotherapist.
  • Sandeep Uppal, Senior Prosthetist and Orthotist, and Area Manager.

Their complementary roles will bring both prosthetic management and rehabilitation perspectives to the discussion. Participants can expect an exploration of MPKs that extends from clinical decision-making to their role in supporting mobility and daily function.

For prosthetists, physiotherapists and other rehabilitation professionals, this multidisciplinary focus provides a useful opportunity to reflect on how their respective contributions shape the overall care pathway.

Access for an International Audience

ISPO has announced live interpretation in Spanish and French, widening access to the session for its international community.

The webinar is suitable for prosthetists and orthotists, physiotherapists, rehabilitation physicians, occupational therapists, allied health professionals and students. Clinicians involved in amputee rehabilitation are also encouraged to attend.

For IMEA CPO readers, the agenda offers a shared learning opportunity across professional disciplines. Its emphasis on prescription, functional training and participation makes it relevant to teams reviewing how advanced prosthetic technologies fit within their services.
