The Composite Regional Centre for Skill Development, Rehabilitation and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (CRC-K), Kozhikode, India observed the International Day for Persons with Disabilities on 3 December in collaboration with Lions Club International – Calicut (Zamorians). The programme focused on enhancing access to essential orthotic care for individuals with Cerebral Palsy, muscular and neurological disorders, orthopedic conditions, and multiple disabilities.
As part of the initiative, a structured assessment and clinical screening exercise was conducted by the Prosthetics and Orthotics Department of CRC-K under the leadership of Mr. Akshay Kumar (Prosthetist & Orthotist). Comprehensive clinical evaluations were carried out to assess each beneficiary’s functional needs and prescribe appropriate orthotic solutions. Based on these assessments, the CRC-K clinical team in association with lions partners fabricated customized orthotic devices, which were fitted to the beneficiaries on the day of the observance.
The event was graced by the esteemed presence of Shri K. Baijunath, Chairperson of the Kerala State Human Rights Commission, whose participation added depth and significance to the programme. Dr. Roshan Bijlee, Director, CRC-K, highlighted the global importance of observing this day and underscored the continued need for advocacy to promote equality, accessibility, and empowerment. He emphasized the crucial role of prosthetic and orthotic services in enabling autonomy, improving mobility, and upholding the dignity of persons with disabilities.
Distinguished dignitaries including Lions Governor Mr. Ravi Gupta and Mr. M. K. Saseendran also addressed the gathering, commending the collaborative efforts and reaffirming their commitment to community welfare.
During the session, Mr. Akshay Kumar, Head of Prosthetics & Orthotics, delivered an insightful address on the clinical significance of orthotic interventions in enhancing functional independence. He highlighted how evidence-based prosthetic and orthotic practices contribute to safeguarding the rights and improving the quality of life of persons with disabilities.
A total of 230 beneficiaries received services through this joint initiative, marking a significant contribution toward improving mobility, independence, and social participation for persons with disabilities in the region.
This meaningful observance reflects CRC-K’s unwavering commitment to inclusive rehabilitation and collaborative community engagement, truly embodying the spirit and vision of the International Day for Persons with Disabilities.
