Prosthetic Hand Campaign Empowers 204 Individuals in Koshi Province

A free artificial hand distribution campaign, jointly organized by Karuna Foundation Nepal and The Hand Project, was inaugurated in Itahari on Monday.

The week-long initiative will run from November 2 to 12 (Kartik 17–26), providing prosthetic hands to 20 to 25 individuals each day. The Koshi Province Minister for Internal Affairs and Law Revati Raman Bhandari attended the inaguration event.

Technical teams from Germany, New Zealand, and Uganda are conducting the measurement, fitting, and training sessions. The initiative aims to provide lightweight, functional, and natural-looking prosthetic hands and arms to 204 persons with disabilities across 13 districts of Koshi Province, free of cost.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Minister Bhandari highlighted that access to assistive devices is the right of persons with disabilities. He urged beneficiaries to regularly use and practice with their new prosthetic hands to support independence and daily activities. The minister also reaffirmed the provincial government's commitment to disability rights, prevention, and rehabilitation.

Representatives from local governments, Karuna Nepal, the National Federation of the Disabled–Nepal, beneficiary families, and media personnel were present at the event. The first group of beneficiaries received their prosthetic hands during the ceremony.

Karuna Foundation Nepal Director Yogendra Giri stated that the campaign's objective goes beyond distributing artificial hands. "Our goal is to help persons with disabilities regain confidence, dignity, and self-reliance," he said.

The initiative, part of the province's disability prevention and rehabilitation program implemented across 137 local levels, has sparked enthusiasm among beneficiaries and is expected to inspire similar humanitarian activities in other parts of the country.
