The Ethiopian Physical Support Service (EPSS) has donated medical and technical equipment to the Abraha Bahita Rehabilitation Center in the Harari Region, as part of ongoing efforts to expand access to rehabilitation and assistive technology services across the country.
The initiative follows the strategic direction of the Ministry of Health to improve availability of rehabilitation care and ensure that regional centres are equipped to provide prosthetic, orthotic, and mobility support services to local communities. In line with this objective, EPSS is working in close cooperation with regional health authorities to address gaps in rehabilitation infrastructure and technical capacity.
As part of the latest support programme, equipment valued at more than 10 million Ethiopian birr has been delivered to the Abraha Bahita Rehabilitation Center. The donation includes mobility aids, raw materials for prosthetic and orthotic production, lamination materials, components, metals, hand tools, electrical equipment, and workshop machinery required for assistive device fabrication.
The supplied materials will allow the centre to begin providing technical rehabilitation services locally, reducing the need for patients to travel long distances to access prosthetic and orthotic care. In addition to equipment support, EPSS has assigned assistive technology professionals to the centre to help install the machinery, train staff, and support the start-up of production services.
Mr. Wondesen Shiferaw, Executive for Assistive Technology Production and Installation at EPSS, confirmed that technical specialists from the institution have been deployed to ensure the safe installation of equipment and to support the launch of services at the rehabilitation centre.
Dr. Abdi Amin, Head of the Harari Regional Health Bureau, welcomed the support and stated that the Abraha Bahita Rehabilitation Center will now be able to provide more flexible and comprehensive services to the community. He expressed appreciation for the contribution made by the Ethiopian Physical Support Service, noting that the equipment and technical assistance will play a key role in strengthening rehabilitation care in the region.
The donation reflects Ethiopia’s continued commitment to expanding rehabilitation services nationwide, with a focus on building regional capacity, improving access to assistive devices, and supporting persons with disabilities through locally available prosthetic and orthotic care.
