When barriers are removed, young people are empowered to chase their dreams without limits. That’s the case for Kananelo Mokhoke, a remarkable teenager who, despite facing mobility challenges from a young age, refused to be held back.
Kananelo was born with a congenital condition that affected growth on the right side of his body, and eventually led to the amputation of his right leg.
In 2013, he was introduced to the Jumping Kids charity, which recognised his potential and love for sports. They fitted Kananelo with an advanced prosthetic leg, allowing for improved movement.
After adapting well to his new walking solution, Kananelo later received a prosthetic running blade to help him play sports and enjoy more physical activities with his friends.
“My favourite thing about having a prosthetic leg is that it keeps me active, I can run, and I feel like I’m really quick. It also helps me with tennis and squash. Those are my favourite sports.”
The matric student currently has sights on finishing the academic year strong and getting into university next year to study marketing.
“Another goal of mine is to enhance my photography skills to one day become a sports photographer. Mainly for the Paralympics.”
There is no denying that this young man has big dreams, with no plans of slowing down. Thanks to the support received from Jumping Kids, a charity run by changemakers Kananelo considers his extended family, he is in a position to attain them all.
The 17-year-old advises others experiencing physical challenges to push past what they can’t do and go after everything that they can to achieve the life they want.
“Don’t let your disability stop you from becoming who you want to be. You must become the kind of person you want to be and manifest it. Your time will come. Push past your limits.”
