CPO of the Week

CPO of the Week: Niwamanya Isaac from Kampala, Uganda

I am Niwamanya Isaac, I am the founder of INS ORTHOTICS LTD. The Pioneer of Private O&P practice in Kampala Uganda. I graduated from Mulago Paramedical Schools in Kampala. INS ORTHOTICS LTD is a leader in O&P and the Largest Distributor in the AT Markets. We have partnerships with major Healthcare facilities, NGOs, Sports facilities and individual Client. Our presence is in Uganda and neighboring countries like DRC, South Sudan, and Western Kenya.

What do you claim is your specialty - your O&P passion?

As a CEO, my position since has been Strategic planning and positioning INS ORTHOTICS LTD to be the brand that addresses the needs of the people in our community. Assistive Technology (AT) in Uganda is characterized by high demand but low accessibility, with over 62%–83% of people needing services lacking access due to high costs, lack of awareness, and limited trained professionals. My goal is to bridge the gap of accessibility and affordability of quality O&P to people with Disabilities in our community.

What do you like most about practicing O&P?

My Motivation knowing the importance of O&P in transforming the lives of people with Disabilities, the sick and Elderly. Our work offers us an opportunity to transform peoples lives from improved function, and Mobility which enables improved health, Wellbeing, inclusion and a chance for one to participate in Society. Think about a Child a with Prosthesis which gives them a chance to go to school, play with peers with minimal limitation.

What frustrates you about O&P?

What Frustrates me about O&P is that regardless of the importance in not only changing Individual lives, universal access to O&P is fundamental in transformation of Families communities and the Economy. But despite all this, in Low developed Countries, the gap of accessibility and of O&P services is still very limited and many people are unable to get the help they need.

What is your greatest patient story in O&P?

It can not be one Patient Story but rather seeing the impact INS Orthotics LTD has had on the O&P terrain in Uganda for the Last 10 years. The stories and number of lives of people we have helped regain their independence and mobility is satisfying and motivates me to keep going. Our initiatives in community outreaches and awareness campaigns have given O&P practice a new face in our community.

How do you build rapport with patients in your care?

We have two Mantras at INS ORTHOTICS LTD; one is you don’t give what you don’t have. As a professional in order to build a relationship with a patient, it all starts with you. How do you relate with yourself and colleagues. We put emphasis on work life balance, capacity building and having our core values embedded in all we do.
Secondly is to Mirror ourselves in the patients’ shoes (Empathy). We ensure to understand our patients’ needs beyond the product or their condition. We appreciate that every patient is different and has to be handled uniquely. It is never a one size fits all when it comes to drawing treatment plans for every patient.
